2012 Hikes:

  • Jan. 9, 2012 - Per Terry, on 1/7: "Happy New Year!!! Since spring is upon us, let's get back to hiking the high country. On Monday I'd like to try the road from the King's Canyon trailhead (where the pavement turns into dirt at the top of Kings Canyon Road.) We'll hike up a couple of miles, then turn around and head back to vehicles. Meet at the trailhead at 10:00 A.M. We shouldn't do more than 4 or 5 miles."
  • Jan. 16, 2012 - Per Terry, on 1/15: "Must we assume that our "spring" is over and that we can expect snow showers this evening?????? Anyway, I was planning on doing the TRT from Spooner T/H north for a few miles since snow hasn't been an issue. Now I don't know what to expect with the present weather report. So....let's meet at Burlington Coat Factory in Carson City at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning and we'll contemplate what to do from there, ok? Maybe Prison Hill would work if there seems to be snow at the higher elevation once more."
  • Jan. 23, 2012 - Per Terry, on 1/17: "Helen & Rudy would like to take you around the Winnie Lane loop in Carson City which is about 5 miles. Meet at their place...at 10 a.m. This is an easy walk which should be able to be done regardless of the weather and snow."
  • Jan. 30, 2012 - Per Terry, on 1/29: "The weather seems fairly good, so let's try a trek on Prison Hill tomorrow. Meet at 10 a.m. at the Big Lots parking area in Carson City. I know a few of you hiked there 2 weeks ago but I'll do a different route."
  • Feb. 6, 2012 - Per Terry, on 2/5: "Would like to try Voltaire Canyon which is at the end of Clearview in Carson City. Let's meet again at the Big Lots parking area off Clearview at 10 A.M, and then drive up a short way to the start of our trek. Dogs should be ok in that area."
  • Feb. 13, 2012 - Per Terry, on 2/12: "Winter is supposed to hit us tomorrow morning, so I've decided to cancel any chance of hiking anywhere. If I've chosen wrongly, find a walk in your neighborhood and go on your own. Maybe next Monday will be better."
  • Feb. 20, 2012 - Per Terri, on 2/19: "The weather should be ok tomorrow morning, so let's try a trek up to the " White Cross" which is on a hill across the street from our house....corner of East Valley & Lindsay Lane. Meet here at 10 a.m. It's a rather steep climb but once we get to the summit it will be all downhill on the way back for which I'd like to ascend to a northern canyon and make a loop back to the vehicles. Probably somewhere around 2 to 3 miles total. Dogs are ok. (Carson City folks could convene at Big Lots at 9:30 if you'd like to carpool from there.)"
  • Feb. 27, 2012 - Hike cancelled due to bad weather.
  • March 5, 2012 - Per Terri, on 3/2: "Eileen Cohen has willingly volunteered to lead you on our weekly trek. She'd like to take you up on the hills across from the Jack's Valley Elementary School on Jack's Valley Road for 3 to 4 miles. The terrain is rather steep at first but once on the top the view is quite rewarding. Meet at the Target parking lot facing Jack's Valley Road at 10 a.m. For any questions Eileen can be reached at 267-2557."
  • March 12, 2012 - Per Terri on 3/11/12: "Despite the iffy type weather, let's try an outing tomorrow anyway. I'd like to explore some of the hills south of the Rancho's in Gardnerville. ( We have been there previously but not for a year or so.) If the wind etc. gets too cold, we'll just turn around and head home. Meet at either the Big Lots parking area off Clearview in Carson City at 9:30 A.M. or the park in Minden off Ironwood at 10 a.m. Dress warmly."
  • March 19, 2012 - Per Terri on 3/18/12: "Sorry to say that there will not be any outing tomorrow. Just seems too darn cold. Maybe next Monday will be better."
  • March 26, 2012 - Per Terri on 3/19/12: "I've scheduled next Monday's outing to Hot Springs Mountain. Weather permitting, of course, but it will be a 2 mile round trip, 1,000 ft. elevation gain on good dirt roads and some cross country trail. We'll meet at 10 a.m. at the corner of East Valley Road and Lindsay Lane in Johnson Lane area, and our home location. If weather seems doubtful, feel free to call me at 267-5366 around 9 o'clock to check if the trip is cancelled."
  • April 2, 2012 - Bently/Kirman Trail - Per Terri on 4/1/12: "The distance is close to 5 level miles, if we do all of it. If you know the trailhead, meet there at 10 a.m. If you don't, then I'll be waiting a little before 10 o'clock at the corner of Stephanie and Heybourne (Johnson Lane area) to lead you to the starting place. Hopefully the mosquitoes shouldn't be out yet!"
  • April 9, 2012 - Trail to Silver Saddle Ranch - Per Terri on 4/4/12: "Next Monday's outing will be led by Helen & Rudy Moreno. They would like to walk from the park at the end of 5th Street in Carson City to the Silver Saddle Ranch and perhaps on to the Mexican Dam for about 5 level miles. Either meet at the park at 10:15 or Big Lots off Clearview at 10 a.m. Any questions, they can be reached at 882-6480."
  • April 16, 2012 - Painted Rock/Sunrise Pass Road/Hills South - Per Terri on 4/15/12: "...letŐs meet at 10 a.m. at the end of Johnson Lane Road from which point we'll caravan up to the Painted Rock on Sunrise Pass Road. From there we'll scout a new route over some hills south. Should be fun."
  • April 23, 2012 - Update from Terri, per her 4/22/12 e-mail: "It looks as if tomorrow will be too hot to hike up the Jumbo Grade Trail to the Postpiles which I had planned. (Maybe next Monday the weather will be cooler and we'll be able to do it then.) So, I'd like to take you on the trail from the Curtz/Summit Lakes Trailhead near the Indian Creek Reservoir down to the Carson River and back. Probably about 2 miles each way. Really a nice trek. Meet at Big Lots in Carson City at 8:30 A.M. or the park on Ironwood in Minden at 9 o'clock."
  • April 30, 2012 - Rattlesnake Peak/Huffaker Hills/Reno - Per Terri on 4/25/12: "...we will do a bit of traveling to Reno to do Rattlesnake Peak and possibly a short hike in Huffaker Hills. Would be fun to stop at Tamarack Junction afterwards for lunch. Let's see what the group feels like doing, ok? Meeting place will be the old K-Mart building on College Parkway at 9 a.m."
  • May 7, 2012 - (no hike specified as of 4/25/12) Update from Terri, per her 5/7/12 e-mail: "Since Ed and I will be camping near Grover Hot Springs this Monday, let's have our outing in that area. We'll hike the fairly level trail, which I think is called the Emigrant Trail from the highway out of Markleeville to the Grover Hot Springs Cpg. and back, probably about 4 miles RT. Afterward we'd love to have you stop at our campsite in Turtle Rock Campground for a root beer float. Meet at the park on Ironwood at 9 a.m. where Bob Verzello will herd you all together and proceed to meet Ed and myself at the entrance to the Turtle Rock Campgrounds and then on to the trailhead."
  • May 14, 2012 - Jumbo Grade to Postpiles - Update from Terri, per her 5/12/12 e-mail: "It might be a little warm on the trail from Washoe Lake to the Devil's Postpile on Monday, but let's give it a try. Meet at the Gold Gym location (formerly K-Mart) on College Parkway in north Carson City at 9 a.m. We can carpool from there. If we reach the postpile the total mileage for the trip will be about 6 miles. Make sure you have enough water."
Update from Terri, per her 5/13/12 e-mail: "I've got a change in tomorrow's outing. Hope you won't mind but we did a super new trail today, the Van Sickle/Tahoe Rim Trail from Stateline and liked it so much that I want to share it with you tomorrow. (We'll keep the Jumbo Grade/Postpile one for a cooler day in the Fall.) This fairly new trail which begins behind Harrah's is steep, but no rocks, and the views are fabulous!! The end could be at a neat waterfall in about 1.5 miles or we could travel farther to the TRT at the Boulder Ski Area for a 4 mile trek...one way. I'm not sure just where the trail at Boulder begins so for tomorrow let's just plan on going a bit past the waterfall, turn around and head back to the park's trailhead. I know you'll love it! (Or we could do a shuttle if any of you know just where to park a vehicle for the ending. Let me know by tonight.)

Meeting will be at 9 a.m. at the park on Ironwood in Minden once more or if any of you Tahoe folks want to join us, just meet at the Van Sickle Bi Park trailhead probably between 9:30 and 9:45."
  • May 21, 2012 - Hike w/ Judy Frederick in Reno / Brown's Creek - Per Terri on 5/20/12: "Tomorrow we will join Judy Frederick for a trek on the Brown's Creek Trail which is near her home in South Reno. Meet at the old K-Mart on College Parkway in Carson City, now called Gold's Gym, at 9 a.m. From there we will car pool the next 20 minutes to meet Judy at the Joy Lake electronic gate which will be a shortcut for those of us coming from the south. Reno folks can meet us at the trailhead by taking the Mt. Rose Hwy for about 4 miles to a left at Joy Lake Rd. Follow it for 1.5 miles to parking area and kiosk to your east. We will rendezvous there about 9:30 A.M. Bring your lunch for the trip will be about 5 miles. After which we'll drive over to Judy's home for an ice cream social...her treat. Sounds like a neat day! Come join us."
  • May 28, 2012 - New Genoa Canyon Trail w/ Dick Morissette - Per Terri on 5/23/12: "Dick Morissette will be leading you on the new trail from Genoa Canyon to the Waterfall, a distance about 3 miles one way. Meet him at 9 a.m. at the trailhead on Carson Street off Foothill in Genoa. (From Genoa Lane, take a left on Foothill and drive 2 blocks to Carson St., on the right.) Should be a great hike!"
  • June 4, 2012 - Ebbett's Pass Exploration w/ Anne Phillips - Per Terri on 6/3/12: "Tomorrow we'll drive up Hwy 4 to Ebbett's Pass for a delightful excursion with Anne Phillips on one of her favorite hikes. Meet at Ironwood at 9 a.m. and we'll carpool as much as possible from there for it will be a good hour's drive or so to the trailhead at the Pass. Bring clothes for layering for it might be cool at that elevation and hopefully the predicted rain will hold off until we're home. Mileage will be between 3 and 4 miles with some elevation gain. Anne recommends hiking poles for there is a section of slippery shale to conquer. Also cameras would be neat for there are some interesting rock formations on the trail, as well as lunch or a good snack. Snow will not be a problem as Anne checked it out last weekend and the terrain was fine."
  • June 11, 2012 - Slaughterhouse Canyon - Update from Terri, per her 6/7/12 e-mail: "I'd like to explore the new TRT (Tahoe Rim Trail) from Boulder Ski parking lot to hopefully the waterfall on the Van Sickle trail. Ed and I checked the area out last week and it really looks interesting. Should be around 4 to 5 miles. Meet at Ironwood at 9 a.m. or the Boulder Ski lot at 9:30 A.M."
  • June 18, 2012 - Markleeville Falls w/ leader Ray Hildebrand (265-2312). - Meet at Ironwood Park in Minden at 9 a.m.
  • June 25, 2012 - Eagle Ridge to Sierra Canyon - Update from Terri, per her 6/13/12 e-mail: TRT @ Stagecoach to Van Sickle State Park - Meet at Ironwood Park in Minden at 9 a.m. Per Terri on 6/24/12: "I hope you have all printed out the latest schedule and know that tomorrow we will be doing the TRT/Van Sickle Trail from Stagecoach to the Van Sickle Park's Trailhead in Stateline. Ed and I checked it out early this afternoon and it's really a super trail. However...from the parking lot at Stagecoach the trail is quite steep up to the junction of the south & north sections of the TRT. So, beware of that process at the beginning of the day. After that the trail seems to be pretty moderate with good tread and some short and easy elevation gains. It's about a mile from the parking lot to the junction where we had our snack 2 weeks ago. From there it should be about 4 more miles past the waterfall and down to the Van Sickle parking lot. Really seems like a terrific day, and I'm so excited to be doing something new!!!!! Hopefully we'll be able to get a car shuttle worked out. Also, Pat & George Menninger, our summer friends from Chicago, have invited us to stop by their condo afterwards for some watermelon, cheese & crackers. Hope you all can make it."
